Kidcycle consignment sale becomes non-profit fundraiser

Michelle Old co-founded Kidcycle and is the Diaper Bank's executive director. In fact, the sale provided the start-up donation to create the bank, which collects diapers and distributes them to local agencies who help families in need. Since then, the sale has provided money and in-kind donations through its Dollar Day proceeds and Diaper Drop.

But, this year, 100 percent of Kidcycle's proceeds will go back into the charity, ultimately providing thousands of diapers to local kids in need.

WIC, food stamps and other social service programs don't cover the cost of diapers for families who are struggling. At a cost of about $100 a month to diaper a baby, one in three families don't have enough money to keep their babies clean and dry. (Old has been fielding an increased number of calls from teachers and families in the military, who are seeking help). Babies who wear dirty diapers for too long can get uncomfortable diaper rashes and serious infections.

The bank also has cloth diapers for families, though they can be tricky to maintain for some families who don't have their own washing machine or have kids in daycare, which typically require disposable diapers.

This season's sale is at Northgate Mall in Durham. Public shopping hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m., Sunday (when some items are half off).

The public also can shop early by bringing in unused diapers your kids have outgrown or a pack of diapers. The Diaper Drop Sale is noon to 8 p.m., Thursday.

The sale's Dollar Day, when every item is just $1, is 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 17.

This year's sale will feature more sellers. Old expects this to be the biggest sale yet.

“Kidcycle’s Fall & Winter Sale represents a win-win for our community,” Old said in a press release. “We are excited about the opportunity to help both our consignors and babies in need benefit from the sale’s success.”
