Julia Sims: Lessons on the hard court

Some days, I think, adults could and should take their cue from younger folks. I recently met a high school student who could teach us all a lesson in compassion.

Wynn Burrus is a senior at Broughton High School in Raleigh. Her father emailed our station about a little "get -together" she was organizing. His email intrigued me, so naturally, we had to check it out.

What we found was something inspiring. Wynn dedicates a lot of her time to the special needs student population at school.

She told me many of these students love basketball and really love Wolfpack basketball. So, she pulled some strings and surprised the students with a visit from a couple of N.C. State Men's basketball players.

The students whooped and hollered when they heard the news. It was fantastic!

I also saw how much they appreciated Wynn's efforts. It turns out she also organizes a winter and spring prom for her fellow students. I asked Wynn what motivates her. She told me "I want them to know they are an important part of our school. They matter."

I can't imagine how proud Wynn's parents must be of her. I know I walked away thinking I hope my little boy grows up to be just like her. We could certainly use some more Wynn Burrus's in this world.
