PRINCETON, N.C. — A Johnston County couple was charged Saturday with abusing their 21-month-old son.

After being called about a fight, deputies found Richard Scott Lane, 27, and Kelsey Jana Hood, 19, outside and their toddler alone inside their home at 6900 Hickory Crossroads in Princeton, authorities said.

Investigators with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office said that Lane abused both his son and girlfriend.

The boy had severe bruising on his face and head and red marks on his body, authorities said. Hood showed signs of having been choked, along with a bite mark and bruises.

Lane and Hood were charged with felony child abuse resulting in serious injury and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Investigators said they charged Hood because she knew about the child abuse and did nothing to report it or stop it. She was given a $50,500 bond.

Lane was also charged with domestic assault, assault on a government official and resisting a public officer. He was being held under a $300,000 bond.
