SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Law enforcement in Johnston County are warning drivers to be cautious when stopping to assist stranded motorists.

The warning was issued after a man was robbed when he pulled over to help a woman and child standing beside a parked car on Swift Creek Road near U.S. Highway 70.

Deputies said when the Good Samaritan stopped two men armed with guns got out of the parked car and robbed him of money and jewelry.

Deputies say drivers who spot a stranded driver should call the state Highway Patrol by dialing *HP on a cell phone.
