FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Seventeen headstones in the Jewish section of Cross Creek Cemetery No. 2 were damaged over the weekend, Fayetteville police said Monday.

The historic Cross Creek cemeteries have been targets of vandals for years, and Fayetteville spent $85,000 two years ago to install a wrought-iron fence around Cross Creek Cemetery No. 1, the city's oldest cemetery. It sits across the street from the area that was vandalized over the weekend.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-433-1856 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.

Family members needing information on repairing the headstones can call Bruce Daws, the city's historic properties manager, at 910-433-1457.
