The folks at JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh are planning a preschool storytime this month. If it proves popular, it could become a regular program at the arboretum, which is part of N.C. State.

A Garden Storytime is planned for 10:30 a.m., May 11. It's designed for kids ages 3 to 5 and their adults. The group will meet at the Bobby G. Wilder Visitors Center and then head out into the gardens. There will be garden stories; songs and movement; and a craft to take home.

The storytime is free, but preregistration is required because space is limited. To register, email Elizabeth Overcash, children's program coordinator, at elizabeth_overcash@ncsu.edu with your name and your child’s name and age with

“Garden Storytime” as the subject heading.

Overcash also is planning an event for older kids. At 1:30 p.m., May 20, kids ages 5 to 8 can spend a Sunday afternoon talking about Delicious Plant Parts. The program focuses on plant biology. They'll talk about what's a vegetable and what's a fruit and have some fun with food.

Again, the program is free, but preregistration is required. To register for this program, email Overcash at elizabeth_overcash@ncsu.edu or call her at 919-513-7007.

The arboretum began adding more family programs last year. I'm excited to see the new storytime and hope it becomes a regular event!
