Inmate escapes Butner minimum-security facility

BUTNER, N.C. — Authorities were looking for help from the public Thursday night after a head count revealed that an inmate under minimum security at a Butner detention camp had escaped.

Bobby Eugene Crews was discovered missing at about 4 p.m. from the Butner Satellite Prison Camp. The facility houses about 300 inmates.

Crews, 57, is white, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has brown eyes, gray hair and a tattoo of a cross with “NC” on his left forearm and a tattoo of a shield with a sword and a ball and chain on his right upper arm. He also has a scar on his right upper arm.

Crews was serving time for drug and firearms possession charges and would have been due for release, with good behavior, in 2020. He is originally from Madison, NC.

Anyone with information on where Crews might be is asked to contact the nearest office of the FBI.
