CARTHAGE, N.C. — A standoff in Moore County has come to an end.

Authorities said a man barricaded himself inside a home at the Sandy Pines Mobile Home Park at 160 Sandy Pines Lane.

"I just left with my purse, my child and my charger," neighbor Katie Surratt said.

Surratt lives in the area with her 2-year-old daughter. She said her father heard gunshots around 2 p.m. Friday. Shortly after, dozens of police arrived on the scene with rifles.

"I even had the cop escort me out because I was scared to go on my own," Surratt said. "He came over [and] he watched us go out. I felt safer leaving.

"In the back of my head, I thought, 'What if he gets out and goes into people's houses?'”

Southern Pines police posted on Facebook that officers were investigating the disturbance around 7 p.m. Police asked for people to avoid the area.

Several residents were sitting out on their porch when the shots rang. Authorities asked them to leave their homes as quickly as possible.

“Our trailer park is a quiet trailer park," Donna nagy said. "It’s a family-oriented place.

"When you see cops with assault rifles, I mean, something is not right."

Authorities said no deputies have been injured.

“It’s really an inconvenience not being able to go home, but I’m just glad me and my family and everybody else there is safe, and I hope the best for the shooter and the cops,” Surratt said.

Residents told WRAL News that the landowner who lives nearby has opened his home to all the residents who were forced to leave. Some residents are not sure exactly when they’ll be able to go back home.
