RALEIGH, N.C. — A teen is in custody after a woman was assaulted along a Raleigh greenway.

Around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, officers with the Raleigh Police Department responded to an assault along the East Fork Mine Creek Trail at Longstreet Drive and Bent Creek Drive.

According to police, a good Samaritan witnessed a woman being assaulted and called 911. The woman was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A young man was taken into custody a short distance away, and a juvenile petition was filed for common law robbery.

Radio traffic indicates the alleged attacker is between 16 and 18. Due to age, his identity will not be released.

Police said the teen was injured as he tried to rob the woman and she defended herself. He was treated at the scene.

In a 911 call obtained by WRAL News, a caller can be heard telling the operator, "There is some guy attacking some girl on the greenway."

The caller sounded frantic, and at one point the 911 operator had to ask her to take a deep breath and "please stop hollering."

"The man was on top of her ... I don't want this girl to die," the caller goes on to say.

According to the caller, an older woman witnessed the attack and ran for help.

Oliver Udemba, who lives nearby, said he visits the greenway three to four times a week.

"You don't hear of anything like this happening here," he said. "It could be somebody from out of the neighborhood. It's not something that we think could happen, I think it's just out of the ordinary."

Bobby Cohen also lives nearby and visits the greenway often.

"It's strange, because I never hear about these things," he said. "Wherever you go, there's always some mixed-up folk who like to make life difficult for others."
