RALEIGH, N.C. — After several months of rebuilding the inside lanes of Interstate 440 as part of the Fortify project, crews are shifting their work to the outside lanes.

With this shift, westbound traffic between Interstate 40 and the Knightdale Bypass will move to the newly paved inside lanes starting Monday. Eastbound traffic will shift to the inside lanes in August.

With the shoulders eliminated as part of the shift, here are a few safety reminders:

  • If you get into a fender-bender with no injuries, move the vehicles to the next exit. The Knightdale Bypass, Poole Road and Rock Quarry Road all are good options.
  • If you break down in the travel lane and can't move, stay inside your vehicle, call 911 and turn on your hazard lights.

If you don't have a phone, DOT workers, the Highway Patrol and towing crews are regularly patrolling the area for drivers in trouble.

Interstate 440 should be completely rebuilt before the end of the year, which is when the Fortify project will then shift to Interstate 40 in south Raleigh.
