All westbound lanes of I-40 were closed during the Thursday morning commute after a crash involving five vehicles.

The call came in around 4:45 a.m., when officers were dispatched to I-40 near NC-55. The highway is closed near the I-885 interchange in Durham.

The extent of injuries is unknown. WRAL News is working to learn how many people were hurt and whether anyone was taken to the hospital.

Around 6 a.m., I-40 was allowed to reopen.
