HUD: Durham Housing Authority 'troubled'

Posted Updated

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has classified the Durham Housing Authority's handling of affordable housing as "troubled."

During a July 14-18, 2008, review of its Section 8 program, public housing specialists identified several problems, including the way it determines reasonable rent, verifies income from a third party, enforces housing quality standards and encourages housing opportunities outside of areas with a high poverty concentration.

The Durham Housing Authority's chief operating officer, Sonny McMahand, says the score is from 2007 records and that indications for 2008 are much better. He expects DHA to pull out of its troubled designation.

The Durham Housing Authority is a municipal corporation funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
