RALEIGH, N.C. — Construction crews razing a house struck a gas main Tuesday morning, prompting the evacuation of several nearby houses, authorities said.

Crews were tearing down the house at 109 Maple St. when they hit a 0.75-inch gas line operated by PSNC Energy, utility spokeswoman Angie Townsend said. The line was cut at about 10:50 a.m. and was capped within a half hour, she said.

Several homes on the 100 block of Maple Street were evacuated, and Raleigh police were directing traffic through the area.
