DURHAM, N.C. — A horse died Monday morning when it was hit by a car north of Durham, authorities said Tuesday.

Two Durham County deputies responded to a report of a horse in the road near the intersection of Guess Road and St. Albans Court at about 1:45 a.m. As they approached the horse, it bolted and ran north on Guess Road and into some woods near Cardens Creek Drive, authorities said.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office received another call of a horse in the road near Milton Road and Madden Avenue at about 3:30 a.m., but deputies were unable to locate the animal, authorities said. About a half-hour later, deputies were sent to Milton Road and Ridgeview Road after receiving a report that a vehicle had collided with a black horse.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Durham Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the Lebanon Fire Department was called to remove the horse's carcass from the road, authorities said.

It's unclear who owned the horse, authorities said.
