HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Hope Mills officials said Thursday they are moving forward with plans to replace the Hope Mills Lake dam.
The current dam is the third built on the site. The first was in 1839, and the second, an earthen dam built in 1924, stood for 80 years until it was breached by heavy rain in 2003.

The town contracted an engineering firm to build a third dam, which was completed in 2008 for $14 million. Less than two years later, it failed and the lake drained.

The town agreed to a $9.4 million settlement against the companies that built the third dam. and officials said they plan to use the money to build a fourth.

The mayor and town commissioners have scheduled a series of meetings on the issue and hope to have a contract in place by the end of the year.
