Kids ages 8 to 11 can experience farm life for a week in June at Historic Oak View County Park. The Wake County park also is gearing up for a folk festival and birthday party for its goats.

Historic Oak View County Park, one of my long-time favorite family spots in the area, will hold its first solo summer camp in June.

The Wake County park off Poole Road has partnered with other parks on camps before, but this is the first that Oak View staffers will do on their own.

Oak View Farm Camp runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 23 to June 27, for ages 8 to 11. The cost is $80 per child. Here's a description.

"Build some muscles and get in shape while living the life of a farmer in this camp! Each day will explore a different theme of farm life. The campers will learn through games and hands-on activities about the farm's animals (including our goats and guest animals!), the history of the farm, the daily farm work, the crops grown here, and finally, what the kids did for fun on the farm. Some highlights from our agenda include: using a compass to tour Oak View, hands-on educational programs, fishing in the pond, riding a pony mule, planting your own vegetable, playing ‘Wheel of Misfortune' about farming, enjoying historic lawn games, making and eating ice cream, and much more!"

Space is limited for this camp. Call the park at 919-212-7695 or email sara.drumheller@wakegov.com to reserve a spot.

Also coming up at the park:

A Folk Festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 7. The day includes storytimes for kids at 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and games, along with live music, crafts, exhibitors and a lecture about African Americans and women in the rural south. Admission is free.

And from 10 a.m. to noon, June 21, the park will host a 9th birthday bash for its goats, Boyd, Quint and Walt. The free event, which requires no pre-registration, includes games, activities, cake and a round of Happy Birthday.

Historic Oak View County Park is found at 4028 Carya Dr., Raleigh.
