TARBORO, N.C. — The Hillshire Brands Company plans to expand its bakery operations in Edgecombe County, creating 98 jobs over the next three years, officials said Wednesday.

The company will invest $28.4 million to upgrade and improve the Tarboro facility, which produces the Sara Lee line of baked goods, officials said.

"We’re glad to invest in our Tarboro plant, which will mean more jobs for the city," said Wes Morris, president of prepared foods for Tyson Foods Inc., Hillshire's parent company. "The existing infrastructure, location and availability of a qualified workforce make the plant ideal for this expansion project."

The Tarboro bakery opened in 2000 as part of what was then Sara Lee Corp. Hillshire already employs 687 people there, and officials said the expanded workforce will add nearly $3 million to the bakery's annual payroll.

Hillshire qualified for a grant of up to $300,000 from the One North Carolina Fund, Edgecombe County and Tarboro. Companies receive no money upfront and must meet job and investment targets to obtain the funds.
