RALEIGH, N.C. — Rain in Raleigh Friday night put the planned makeover of the roundabout at the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Pullen Road near North Carolina State University on hold indefinitely.

After two years at two lanes and more than 100 fender-benders, the city and North Carolina Department of Transportation agreed to reduce the circle to one lane in hopes of improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety.

John Sandor, a transportation engineer with the City of Raleigh, says they are trying reduce the number of "conflict points" in the area that could potentially cause crashes.

The work must be done as part of an overnight project, and crews had planned to close the intersection from Friday at 8:30 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday. But summer storms washed away that plan.

DOT spokesman Steve Abbott said it would be up to the city to reschedule with just two weekends before N.C. State students return for the fall semester.
