RALEIGH, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation will suspend road construction activities that could affect travel over the holidays to help ease traffic delays and make driving conditions safer, officials said Monday.

Major construction projects along interstate and U.S. routes across North Carolina will be suspended from 4 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Jan. 2, officials said.

Authorities said drivers could still encounter narrowed lanes and traffic shifts in work zones. Lowered speed limits through work zones also remain in effect during the holidays, and drivers who exceed the limits face a $250 fine.

DOT officials also offered the following driving tips during the holidays:

  • Stay alert.
  • Be patient and obey the posted speed limit.
  • Leave early to get a head start on your drive and travel at non-peak times.
  • Use alternate routes, when possible, to avoid traffic congestion.
