ELM CITY, N.C. — After falling branches punctured a hole into Kathryn Jones’ two car garage and damaged her fence, the Elm City resident had a message for others.

“I wanted to make all people aware, I don't care how healthy the tree is, the weight of these branches are so astronomical, it will kill you in a heartbeat,” she said. “The damage it did, it would have flattened me. When I walk out there and get in the middle of the yard, I'm scared.”

Heavy snow led to downed trees and power lines across central and eastern North Carolina.

In Elm City’s Pine Haven neighborhood, a huge tree snapped, sending limbs, branches sand debris onto the home of Michael Godwin’s neighbor.

“Sometime during the night, we heard the limps cracking,” he said. “It sounded like dynamite going off. The wife and the cat jumped up and went into the living room, we looked out the window, some of these limbs had fell, not all of them, but they continued to fall.”

In Wilson's Brookside neighborhood, Rob Robbins said seeing limbs on the ground reminded him of what his area looks like after a hurricane.

"It was probably about 1:30 in the morning and it was like a crack, whap and a pop," he said. "You could actually feel the ground almost tremble."
