RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County Health Department is expanding its effort to bring COVID-19 vaccines directly to families by administering vaccinations in select areas.

Healthcare workers with WakeMed Physician Practices are now on standby to administer free shots to eligible residents who would like one. With COVID-19 cases on the rise in the state and throughout the country, WakeMed teams are trying to increase the vaccination rate by canvassing neighborhoods to administer first and second doses right at home.

The program uses Census tract data to find areas in the county where vaccination rates are low. Healthcare experts will be available to talk to residents and answer questions they have about the vaccine.

"This initiative is just another way we’ve flexed our COVID-19 response to meet people where they are,” said Wake County Board of Commissioners Chairman Matt Calabria. “As the Delta variant threat increases in our county, this expansion of our vaccine outreach emphasizes convenience and access for our communities hardest hit by the pandemic.”

Everyone 12 and older is eligible for the vaccine. The county reports nearly 70% of that eligible population in Wake County has received at least one dose.

Wake County Public Health is not providing on-demand vaccine services at this time. Those in the county who are homebound or have limited mobility can request at-home vaccination appointments through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services At-Home Vaccination Request Form.

In addition, a free vaccine event is taking place in front of the Hamrick’s store at Wilder's Grove Shopping Center on New Bern Avenue on Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
