LILLINGTON, N.C. — The Harnett County Sheriff's Office is investigating an armed robbery by a man impersonating a law enforcement officer over the weekend.

The victim was traveling south on U.S. Highway 401 toward Lillington around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when a sedan pulled up behind and turned on blue and red flashing lights, deputies said. Thinking it was a legitimate traffic stop, the victim pulled over.

The suspect approached the victim's vehicle, shining a flashlight into the victim's eyes and using a handgun to demand money. The victim gave the robber money, and he fled in the opposite direction.

Because of the light, the victim was unable to get a good look at the suspect, but investigators say he was described as white with dark hair and a deep country accent, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and wearing a long-sleeved gray shirt with an insignia on the left chest area.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Harnett County Sheriff's Office.
