ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Roanoke Rapids man tried to kill his stepson after an argument Saturday but shot his neighbor instead, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said that Robert Louis Carey, 68, argued with his stepson at their Haven Drive Home and threatened him with garden tools. When the stepson went to a neighbor's house, authorities said, Carey got a .22-caliber rifle from his home and repeatedly shot into the neighbor's house.

When the neighbor opened the door, he was shot in the leg, authorities said. He was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Carey was charged with attempted first-degree murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. He was being held in the Halifax County jail Monday under a $250,000 bond.
