Gunman robs Oxford bank

A man carrying a black semiautomatic handgun robbed a RBC Centura Bank at 155 Hillsboro St. shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, Oxford police said.

OXFORD, N.C. — A man carrying a black semiautomatic handgun robbed a RBC Centura Bank at 155 Hillsboro St. shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, Oxford police said.

The man, who wore a black bandanna over his face, approached a teller and announced that he was robbing the bank, police said. Witnesses told police he left out of a rear door and got into a vehicle.

The robber was described as black man, standing 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing between 170 and 180 pounds. He wore a grey sweatshirt and blue jeans.

The getaway vehicle was a bright red, small older-model car. Its license plate number might contain HNE11, witnesses said.

Police were reviewing surveillance tape from the bank.
