CHAPEL HILL, N.C.Guglhupf Bakery, Cafe and Restaurant is expanding. The Durham staple will open a retail shop in Chapel Hill's Eastgate Shopping Center in April.
The 1,250 square-foot Bake Shop will focus on fresh pastries, innovative European style breads, desserts and specialty baked goods, in addition to offering a small selection of local and regional grocery items and coffee service.

“We are excited to bring the bakery to Chapel Hill,” Guglhupf owner Claudia Kemmet-Cooper said. “In a way, we are returning to our roots with this smaller second location. The Bake Shop takes me back to our original Bakery & Patisserie we opened in 1998 by focusing on our bakery operations and offering the same product mix we have in the retail bakery in Durham."

The Chapel Hill location will be about the same size as Guglhupf's retail bakery in Durham. The Bake Shop will feature a full lineup similar to the flagship location after the logistics of safely transporting some of the more delicate items is worked out.

While there will be some seating in Chapel Hill, the full cafe and restaurant experience will only be available at the Durham location.

"What we have there is our entire story as it has unfolded over the past 18 years on a property that we were able to sculpt to reflect our personality. Not sure that could ever be duplicated but the Bake Shop will not leave any questions to the fact that it is the Guglhupf," Kemmet-Cooper said.

Guglhupf Bake Shop will be located at 1800 E. Franklin St.
