ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — In a cold case, one piece of information can change everything.

That’s the mindset of a group of area residents and law enforcement officers who formed Team Cold Case, which is dedicated to cracking unsolved crimes in Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties by offering reward money.

"The hope is to help law enforcement," said Arnold Gordon-Bray, one of the founders of Team Cold Case, "The day of ‘I don’t want to be a snitch,’ that’s got to go away, because that’s mafia-style thinking."

Lindell Kay, a reporter who has spent decades covering crime in the area, is also one of the founders of the group, which formed last summer. He said he joined the mission because of his own experience with death in his family.

"I’ve had a couple of family members that have died, and their bodies were not found for a little while," Kay said. "I know the pain that people go through."

One of the most recent cases Team Cold Case featured was that of Jordan Clayton, 19, who was shot and killed on Vernon Road in Rocky Mount in February.

Nobody has been charged in his murder, and his mother, Kimberly Clayton, is hoping that that will soon change.

"One of the hard parts for me is just knowing that the people who did this to my son, they are just roaming around free in the same city where ... I could be driving past and walking past them," Kimberly Clayton said. "Capturing this person won’t bring my son back, but I feel like it would at least give me some sort of peace, some sort of solace [so] that we can just move forward."

Team Cold Case is offering up to $15,000 for information that will lead to an arrest. Tips can be submitted by calling 252-406-6736, and callers can remain anonymous.

The Clayton family is offering an additional $5,000 for tips that will result in Jordan Clayton’s killer being caught.

"If you have information or you know anything, just please try and understand what it would feel like if that was your child and what you would want someone else to do on your behalf if that was your baby," Kimberly Clayton said.
