Grassroots carnival returns with an Asian theme
The Cooke Street Carnival is known for being a neighborhood event that draws big crowds. This year's festival has been dubbed "The Year of the Flamingo" - inspired by the Chinese New Year carnival, Raleigh's hometown festival will feature lanterns, dumplings, a Chinese dragon and more, along with the usual food vendors, local music and fun events.

Carnival highlights include local bands Bombadil and Lonnie Walker, a marshmallow Peep flamingo-eating contest, several food trucks, beer from local breweries and dozens of area art vendors. Kid's activities include a hula hoop jam, face painting, a dunking booth and more.
While the carnival is free, attendees are encouraged to bring canned food to benefit this year's local charity, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
The carnival will take place on Cooke Street in between Lane and Jones streets in the Idlewild Neighborhood near downtown Raleigh.
