FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A special Cumberland County grand jury on Monday heard testimony in a case against the Spring Lake Police Department.

District Attorney Ed Grannis notified the department this month that he planned to ask the grand jury to consider indictments in the case.

There was no word on what criminal allegations have arisen against the department, and a judge ordered records in the case sealed.

Nearly two years ago, Grannis asked a local judge to strip the Spring Lake department of its authority to investigate felonies because of concerns that it wasn't able to handle such cases.

Meanwhile, the Spring Lake Board of Aldermen passed resolutions Monday seeking an opinion from the state Attorney General's Office on the legality of the 2007 court order Grannis sought and authorizing an outside assessment of the town's police department.
