Grab a coat, umbrella: Rain moves in on cooler Friday
Clouds were filtering into central and eastern North Carolina early Friday, setting the stage for a cool, wet afternoon and evening across much of the area.
Posted — UpdatedScattered rain showers could reach the western Triangle by lunchtime, and rain chances will increase from west to east throughout the afternoon, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.
"We won't see the sunshine and warm temperatures Friday that we've gotten used to this week," she said. "It will take a bit for the rain to spread across the area, but once it starts, likely after lunchtime, it's going to be with us for a while. Bottom line, you need a coat and an umbrella today."
Daytime highs will climb into the upper 50s on the final day of the week, a bit below normal for mid-March and cooler than what the Triangle has experienced during the last few days.
Cloudy, rainy conditions will linger on the first day of the weekend, although high temperatures will return to near 70 degrees by Saturday afternoon.
The warmer, more humid air could end up producing a scattered thunderstorm, Gardner said. The area is under a marginal risk for severe storms on Saturday.
"We shouldn't see any really strong storms, but there is a chance to hear some rumbles of thunder," she said.
Once the rain-making system pushes out of the region Saturday night, much brighter conditions will set up shop for several days.
Sunshine will push highs into the upper 60s on Sunday, and that pattern – highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s – will be on repeat during the first part of next week.
