GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A Goldsboro police officer who was shot during a traffic stop is recovering slowly, according to a release from his department Thursday.

Officer Clint Hales was making a stop at the intersection of Elm and Creech streets at about 2:45 p.m. on June 8 when an altercation occurred between him and the driver of a vehicle.

Both Hales and driver Jerome Demond Wright were shot.

Hales and Wright were taken to the Wayne Memorial Hospital by ambulance. Wright was later transported by helicopter to Pitt Memorial Hospital.

Goldsboro police reported Thursday that Hales has had surgery two times and is showing significant improvement. He remains hospitalized.
