General Assembly officer arrested
Former General Assembly Police Office Daniel Shawn Evans has been charged with indecent liberties with a minor and other sex-related offenses.

According to an arrest report filed with the Wake County Sheriff's Office, Daniel Shawn Evans, 42, was arrested at the legislative building Friday morning. He was still being held at the Wake County detention center Monday evening.
His bond was set at $1 million.
"We accepted his resignation today," said Chief Jeff Weaver of the General Assembly police. "We are disappointed and surprised."
Evans, of 5908 Applewood Lane in Raleigh, earned $49,465 as a General Assembly officer. He had served on the force since 1998.
The General Assembly police is a small force that reports to lawmakers. It is primarily responsible for securing the legislative complex, although has certain powers to enforce the law statewide, in particular wherever lawmakers are performing official duties.
According to the arrest report, Evans faces nine charges in connection with four crimes, including two counts of statutory rape, three counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, three counts of a first-degree sexual offense and one other sex offense.
