RALEIGH, N.C. — Children, parents and supporters of education gathered in downtown Raleigh Sunday for a demonstration organized by the non-profit Action for Children North Carolina.

The group is calling on lawmakers to invest in programs that meet children's basic needs.

"The future of our society is our children, and if we don't invest in them today and ensure they have strong building blocks to build a healthy childhood, then we won't have a strong workforce in the future, and our state won't be the best place to live," spokeswoman Mandy Abledinger said.

Demonstrators also say the tough economy means programs like early childhood education are needed now more than ever.
