Downtown Raleigh streets reopen after gas leak
Workers struck a 2-inch pipe Thursday afternoon, prompting a natural gas leak near the intersection of Hargett and Wilmington streets in downtown Raleigh.
Posted — UpdatedThe leak was detected just after 1:30 p.m., and the gas was turned off within an hour.
Police and firefighters blocked access to the streets around the leak area, and police said some of the surrounding buildings were evacuated. Moore Square Transit Station was shut down and buses were relocated to the intersection of Bloodworth and Main streets.
"While little has been required in the way of evacuations, some people in the area are being asked to shelter in place until initial response steps can be completed," Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said in a statement.
South Wilmington and Hargett streets reopened about 4:30 p.m. A small section of sidewalk remained closed.
Transit service also resumed at Moore Square at 4:45 p.m.
