After public outcry, Athens Drive library to remain open

Public outcry mounted after county commissioners announced they would close the library July 26 due to low use and safety concerns. Proponents argued the closure would cut off library access to those who need it the most.

The library will remain on its current schedule until school starts in August, school and county officials announced in a joint statement Thursday night.

“Once classes are in session, we anticipate opening the school library to the public during afternoon, evening and weekend hours until we develop a final solution,” the statement said. “Our evaluation in the coming weeks will focus not only on the short-term needs of the community, but also how we intend to offer public library service in this area for years to come.“
