Funeral held for once-missing Rocky Mount woman
Family and friends laid to rest Saturday a Rocky Mount woman whose skeletal remains were found in early March, nearly four years after she had been reported missing.
Posted — UpdatedA funeral for Christine Marie Boone, who died at age 43, was held at Wilder's Funeral Home in Rich Square at 2 p.m. A burial at Chapel Hill Church Cemetery will follow.
Boone's remains were found in a wooded area in Scotland Neck behind the former residence of Antwan Maurice Pittman, who is suspected in her death and the deaths of three other women. Pittman has been charged in the death of one of six Rocky Mount women found dead in Edgecombe County over the past several years.
Boone was one of three missing women who fit a similar profile of those six – each was black, had a history of drug use, prostitution or both, and family members and friends said many knew each other. A special task force of local, state and federal authorities is looking for possible links among the case
Search warrants say investigators believe that Boone was killed at the house where Pittman lived in 2006. The cause of her death is unclear. DNA testing was done at the home, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
A family member reported Boone missing to Rocky Mount police on Jan. 16, 2007, and she was last seen Aug. 25, 2006.
Boone left behind three children and seven grandchildren.
"My sister was a very loving and caring person who got caught up with the wrong crowd," Minnie Jones, of Knightdale, said in an interview after her sister's remains were found.
