FRANKLINTON, N.C. — Franklinton water customers were switched to the Franklin County water system after an iron build-up in the town's reservoir last week, Mayor Elic Senter said.

The switch affects about 1,100 households and came after the town's water became rust-colored around the July 4th holiday weekend, he said. The water was treated and safe to drink, but couldn't be used to wash white clothes.

Senter said a lack of rainfall commonly causes a higher concentration of iron in the town's reservoir.

Crews are working to fix the problem and hope to switch customers back to town water by next week, he said.
