Four students injured in Nash County wreck

The students were going back to campus for a soccer game against a Roanoke Rapids school when their Chevrolet TrailBlazer lost control at about 3:30 p.m., the state Highway Patrol said. Troopers also said the vehicle was traveling 80 mph in a 50 mph zone.

The vehicle flipped and caused the three passengers to be ejected from their seats. The vehicle landed between a mobile home and a trampoline.

"It sounded like a plane had crashed outside or something,” said Michelle Finch, who lives near the crash scene.

“The worst off, were right behind the car. One of them had a wrist separated. It was just a gruesome sight. One of them … had a broken leg and he was just screaming at the top of his lungs,” student Travis Lamm said.

Paramedics transported Jose Salazar, 17, and Daniel Arroyo, 17, to WakeMed. Leonicio Guerra Jr., 17, who was the driver, and Jesus Rodas, 16, were taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital. The injuries consisted of possible broken bones and bruises, except for Arroyo, who suffered a collapsed lung, authorities said.

Charlene Boothe was inside the mobile home with her daughters at the time of the wreck. She said the vehicle crashed into her 17-year-old's bedroom.

"I thought it was some glass that fell or something on top of the trailer had fallen,” Boothe said.

No one was inside the bedroom.

"Blessed, thank God," Boothe said of her daughter not being injured.

The students were not wearing seat belts, and charges are pending against the driver, authorities said.

The soccer game the students were headed to was canceled due to the wreck.
