Fortify project to limit lanes on I-40 East in Raleigh
Crews working on Raleigh's Fortify project on Interstate 40 plan to shift traffic Friday night in the eastbound lanes to three outside lanes, allowing room for work to rebuild the inside lanes. The net result is two fewer travel lanes between U.S. Highway 1 to Lake Wheeler Road.
Posted — UpdatedSteve Abbot, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation, said crews will take about a week to work on the inside lanes from U.S. 1 to the Interstate 440 split, then they will reverse course and do the same on the westbound side.
Drivers can expect increased travel times through the Fortify work zone, especially Friday afternoon as weekend travelers hit I-40 headed for the coast, Abbot said.
Engineers said to expect a 30 minute delay on I-40 during the morning and evening commutes with ideal conditions.
Abbot said if public transit isn’t an option, I-440 can be used as an alternate route.
“It looks longer on paper,” Abbot said. “It is longer, but if traffic is flowing, that’s a better way to go.”
The Fortify project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016.
