RALEIGH, N.C. — Construction crews working in the Fortify zone will shut down access to Interstate 40 West from Hammond Road Friday night to finish up ramp work.

For safety reasons, the weekend closure will also include the outside lane of I-40 West at the Hammonf Road exit.

The lane closures will go into effect at 9 p.m. Friday, and the ramp and outside lane will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said.

Southbound drivers on Hammond Road will go under I-40, turn right onto Rush Street, which becomes Ileagnes Road, turn right onto South Saunders Street, go under I-40 again and turn left onto the I-40 West ramp.

Northbound drivers will go past the normal ramp entrance, stay on the road when it changes to South Person Street and turn left onto Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. They will use the ramp to the right to get onto southbound South Saunders Street and turn right onto the I-40 West ramp.

When the area reopens Monday, drivers will use a new ramp to access I-40 West.
