FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Stephen J. Townsend was promoted Tuesday to command the post where he began his military career. Lt. Gen. Townsend assumed command of Fort Bragg from outgoing Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson during a change of command ceremony Tuesday morning.

Townsend graduated from North Georgia College in 1982 where he was commissioned through ROTC.

He began his military career at Fort Bragg with the 82nd Airborne Division and has led troops in combat. Townsend's last assignment was as commander of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y.

"Thanks for your confidence and this opportunity. I'll work hard to justify it," Townsend said.

Anderson departs Fort Bragg after nearly two years in command to become the Army's next deputy chief of staff of operations at the Pentagon.

Though the years he commanded the corps, Anderson led his troops though some tough battles in Afghanistan.

"These men are well trained, well led, well equipped," he said. "They are capable of doing anything as they demonstrate each and every day. That is what they are known for and that is what their tradition is and that is what they will continue to demonstrate."
