FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Blackjack, a miniature mule that served as the mascot for the 1st Sustainment Command at Fort Bragg, has died, military officials said Wednesday.

The mule, whose full name was Staff Sgt. John Blackjack, died Sunday from a respiratory illness. The animal was being treated at a veterinary hospital in Parkton.

Blackjack was the unit’s mascot since 1983, when it arrived as a 2-year-old private. The mule was donated to the command by retired Col. Robert O. Wary and his wife, Roseanne.

“Blackjack proudly served under 19 commanders in his 32 years of service to his country. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed,” said Maj. Gen. Darrell K. Williams, commander, 1st Sustainment Command (Theater).

A memorial will be held June 24.
