Former Wayne County sheriff dies

James Sasser, who served as Wayne County sheriff for more than a decade, died Wednesday, officials said.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — James Sasser, who served as Wayne County sheriff for more than a decade, died Wednesday, officials said.

He was 84.

Sasser began his law enforcement career with the Goldsboro Police Department in 1951 and was first elected as sheriff in 1982, according to the Goldsboro Daily News. He held the post until his retirement in 1994.

Sasser had cancer, according to the newspaper.
