ASHBURN, VA. — A former baseball player at North Carolina State University was shot and killed in his Virginia home last week, and authorities have charged his wife's ex-husband in the crime.

Police said Minh D. Nguyen, 38, burst into an Ashburn home on Jan. 15 and opened fire. Corey Mattison, 37, a Burlington native who pitched at N.C. State from 1998 to 2001, was killed.

Nguyen was previously married to Mattison's wife, Denise.

Two of Denise Mattison's children were home at the time, but they were unharmed. She returned home with a third child during the incident, authorities said, and they also weren't harmed.

Nguyen is charged with first-degree murder and using a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was being held without bond in the Loudoun County jail.

Nguyen may best be known as co-founder of Plaxo, an address book software company in Sunnyvale, Calif., that Comcast acquired in 2008. His LinkedIn profile most recently lists him as an adviser to technology companies in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.
