CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A former N.C. State University football player was killed Sunday in a wreck at 11400 N. Tryon St. in Charlotte, according to a police report.

The wreck happened just before 1 a.m. as a Honda was attempting a left turn onto Salome Church Road from North Tryon. The front right corner of a Chevrolet Camaro, was traveling at least 80-100 mph, struck the passenger side of the Honda, police said.

Honda passenger Edrick Smith, 29, a former football player at N.C. State, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where he died, police said. Barry Tyrone Pace, 31, also passenger in the Honda, and driver, Hakeem Ward Holloway, 30, were both hospitalized, police said.

Camaro driver Hugo Fernando Rosillo, 30, fled the scene on foot after the collision, according to the police report.

With the help of a helicopter and a K-9 unit, police arrested Rosillo a short time later.  He was charged with drunken driving, felony hit and run and second-degree murder, police said.

Rosillo was being held Sunday in the Mecklenburg County Jail without bond.

Smith started playing for the Wolfpack in 1998. He set a record for tackling during his freshmen year.
