Former FSU Women's Coach Dies

Maceo Smith, a former basketball and softball coach at Fayetteville State University, died Saturday.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Maceo Smith, a former women's basketball and softball coach at Fayetteville State University, died at her home in Fayetteville on Saturday, July 14.

During her one-year tenure as the women's basketball coach in 1979, Smith lead the team to a CIAA championship. In 1981, she guided the varsity softball program through its first year.

Smith taught dance as an instructor in the Health, Physical Education and Human Services Department from 1978 to her departure in 2000. She returned to FSU as an associate professor in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts in 2005.

Smith, a native of Fayetteville, earned her B.S. in physical education from North Carolina A&T State University in 1978 and a master of fine arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Funeral services for Maceo will be held in the J.W. Seabrook Auditorium on the FSU campus at 10 a.m. Saturday.
