BENSON, N.C. — A Johnston County grand jury has indicted a former Benson police officer in the theft of cash that was evidence in a case, authorities said Tuesday.

Randall William Beasley, 43, was indicted Monday on one felony count of altering, tampering or stealing evidence and one felony count of obstruction of justice.

Beasley resigned from the Benson Police Department in December 2010 after being place on administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation looked into the disappearance of $850 from a locked office in the department, authorities said. The cash was evidence in a pending case.

He had worked for the department from January 1998 to April 2006 and then rejoined the department in November 2009, authorities said.
