Wildfire continues to burn near Hyde-Dare County line; no homes or businesses threatened

A large wildfire near the Hyde-Dare County line has burned nearly 14,000 acres and forced authorities to shut down a stretch of U.S. Highway 264.

ENGELHARD, N.C. — A large wildfire near the Hyde-Dare County line has burned nearly 14,000 acres and forced authorities to shut down a 30-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 264.

The Whipping Creek fire started at about 2 p.m. Monday, when two small fires broke out on private land, according to the North Carolina Forestry Service. It is 15 percent contained.

On Thursday, about 65 forestry service personnel were battling the flames, along with local fire crews.

Officials said no homes or businesses were threatened, but some guardrails and utility poles were burned.

It is not yet clear what started the fire.
