Foodie news: Rooftop moves and food truck rodeos

The patio is open at Glenwood Avenue's Solas. There's no cover charge Fridays and Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Drinks and small plates are served and a DJ spins the tunes.

Taverna Agora served up a private preview dinner Tuesday to mark their move to 326 Hillsborough St. Their new location also features a rooftop patio and they are now serving lunch and dinner seven days a week.

The big event of the weekend is the Downtown Raleigh Food Truck Rodeo, Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m., but if you can avoid the crowds and taste two of the Triangle's best at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham. Both Porchetta and American Meltdown now have anchored installments there.

Next week, the trucks roll over to Durham Central Park for a Father's Day Food Truck Rodeo. Dig in from Noon to 4 p.m.

The newest venture from celeb chef Ashley Christensen, Death & Taxes, is expected to start serving next week. A sneak peek menu leaked online this week. The restaurant, at 105 Hargett St. in downtown Raleigh, is named for the two previous tenants of the building (a funeral home and a bank), and much of the cooking will be done over a wood-fired stove.

The minds behind delicious tapas at Mateo's in Durham are planning an Italian concept. According to the Herald-Sun, Mothers and Sons is set to open on West Chapel Hill Street this fall.

Northgate Mall added Beaver Bog's Ice Cream, a summer-only, pop up ice cream shop that will have scheduled story times and children's musical entertainers.

It's the third year for the Fresh Catch Festival, June 20 in Moore Square. The $8 advance ticket is a bargain for fresh cooked seafood, BBQ and food trucks along with live music and an art market.

And the final weekend of the month features the first Raleigh Food and Wine Festival. This four-day event includes cooking classes, sampling meals and music at a variety of downtown restaurants and wraps up with a food and beverage tasting celebration at Babylon.
