Food truck rodeo, chili challenge this weekend

The latest food truck news in the Triangle.

RALEIGH, N.C. — As the end of 2015 comes to near, the term “the last rodeo of 2015” is something that I will repeat. This Sunday, Wake Forest will have its last one of 2015. The rodeo takes place at noon to 4 p.m. at 405 S. Brooks St. in downtown Wake Forest.

Food trucks scheduled to be there are: Arepa Culture, Captain Ponchos, Charlie’s Kabob Grill, Chick-N-Que, Chirba Chirba, CockADoodle Moo, Cousins Maine Lobster, Dusty Donuts, Fahsyrah’s Lemonade, Gussy’s, Hibachi Xpress, JAM Ice Cream, Jay’s Italian Ice, Kona Ice, Ladybugs’ Treats, Lumpy’s Ice Cream, Pie Pushers, Sarge’s Chef on Wheels, Sweet Traditions and Virgil’s Jamaica.

Also this Sunday, at the Downtown Cary Food and Flea will be the Triangle Chili Challenge. Chefs from around the Triangle will bring their chili to warm the public. Competing chefs include those from The Humble Pig, OMG Chicken and Qspresso. The competition will have a few judges you may know, notably Rusty Nichols of the Chef’s Academy and myself. In addition to the judges, attendees can vote for their favorite. The challenge and the market takes place from noon to 4 p.m.

Also Sunday, there will be a food truck rodeo to benefit the Fill Your Bucket List Foundation. The rodeo is noon to 3 p.m. at the Skipper Bowles parking lot next to the Dean Smith Center on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.

New Food Trucks on the Horizon

One truck that has hit the scene that has intrigued me is Baozi. They are serving Carolina-style steamed buns, or bao. They are running a full schedule (Tuesday-Sunday), which includes stops at Big Boss Brewing, Nickelpoint Brewing, and House of Hops.

Crispy Gyoza made their debut this week with visits to House of Hops off Glenwood Monday night and a service Wednesday at Lonerider Brewing.

Another food truck, Fuzzy’s Empanadas has announced they hope to open later this month. We will update as we here more on them.

Restaurant Closing

I was sad to read that one of my favorite food trucks, Chick-N-Que, has announced closing their Rolesville restaurant last week. It had closed temporarily as the family-operated restaurant focused on the State Fair. They decided last week to make that closure permanent. Both mobile food units are still in operation and roaming the Triangle.
