Fayetteville Food Lion surprises deployed soldier's wife with free groceries

When deployed soldier SSG Jonathan Brungerwood decided to surprise his wife by having her groceries delivered, he received an unexpected surprise as well from his favorite Food Lion in Fayetteville!

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — When deployed soldier SSG Jonathan Brungerwood decided to surprise his wife by having her groceries delivered, he received an unexpected surprise as well. Not only did his favorite Fayetteville Food Lion take his order, do the shopping and deliver the groceries as a birthday surprise for her, they paid for the whole order!

SSG Brungerwood wrote to WRAL this week to share his story. He and his wife, Christin Swann Brungerwood, shop at the same Food Lion on Cliffdale Road in Fayetteville all the time. He wrote: “I'm stationed in Korea right now and she is holding down the fort on her own. Our Food Lion is very friendly, and she has been doing everything on her own now for five months so I wanted to do something nice for her.”

SSG Brungerwood called the store and spoke with Brittany Bourassa, the assistant store manager. He asked if they could grocery shop for him if he emailed a list to the store. Then he asked if there was any way they could deliver the groceries to his wife as a surprise. He wanted her to have one less thing on her plate during the week of her birthday.

The folks at Food Lion agreed to help pick out and deliver $266 worth of groceries. Then they turned the tables on him and surprised SSG Brungerwood by letting him know that they would not be charging him for any of the groceries! Bourassa said Food Lion wanted to “thank him for his sacrifice and for everything he does.”

SSG Brungerwood said, “They sent the managerial team to my house with the groceries to thank my wife for being a military spouse. They made us Food Lion shoppers for life!”
